Revisiting the Writer's Toolbox - "Synesthesia"

 

The literary tool, Synesthesia is for me the most difficult device to master.  In retrospect some of the other tools that we were introduced to seemed very difficult when first attempted.

THE INVASION- May 21’

 

The smell of the raw earth combined with the revolting scent of apple cider vinegar permeated the nostrils.

THE INVASION- May 21’(with synesthesia added)

 

The smell of the raw earth combined with the revolting scent of apple cider vinegar permeated the nostrils, creating an image in my  mind’s eye of an ugly asymmetrical vase, chipped and replete with crazing, full of disheveled flowers, rotting, putrid and malformed, in hues of purple, green, brown and grey presented in a most uncomplimentary arrangement that left an unsavory taste in the mouth like eating a soup made of entropy and evil as the continual noise of their advancing destruction droned on.
