It was an ordinary walk to the grocery store. Most walks are unremarkable and forgettable and dull. All the sites are predictable and average with concrete squares noodled with small beige stones.
It is not unusual to walk past an old bench placed in front of a small six family building. It is more for esthetic purposes but today I noticed primary colors and an intricate design that I was not aware of before.
I looked closer. There to my now open eyes were paintings of twelve gnomes. One for each month of the year. Pointy hats, shirts touching the ground, no eyes, long white beards and tiny feet. January is blue with snowflakes. February is pink with hearts for Valentine’s Day. March is green with shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day. April is purple with flowers for Spring. May is light blue with fresh growing trees, June is turquoise for pools of clear water. July is red, white and blue fireworks for Independence Day. August is bursting with yellow green stars in the sky. September is yellow like a pencil as school opens. October is orange like pumpkins for Halloween. November is burgundy with heavy sweaters for the rain. December is red and green with baubles for the trees and Christmas on the way.
Below these beauties were the following words: As the seasons turn, as you roam the earth, make friends with gnomes wherever you go. You will have good luck and fellowship and protection from evil.
Well, I was taken back, I never noticed this before. I felt charmed and delighted and bewitched. My skin was tingling; I was in the presence of gnomes. In that moment I could not move from the painted bench. I am not sure how long I lingered or if anyone saw me.
Managing to pull myself away I went to my original destination, the grocery store. I picked up milk and bread and eggs and bacon. I was moved to put apples and carrots in my cart. Checking out my goods I separated my items from the apples and carrots.
Passing by the unusual seat I left the apples and carrots to thank the gnomes for their presence and their cheerful message.
My day continued and I forgot about the gnomes until the evening when my skin tingled and there at my door was a small little house gnome. “Welcome,” I said. He nodded and found a cozy place to live.
I know from now on I will be resting easy because I have a special companion and be protected. Lucky me!
Next time you are on an ordinary stroll be mindful of mysteries and surprises in unlikely places. A hidden gem with wise old words perhaps to bring you fortunate luck.
Stay curious. Keep walking. Be kind to all creatures and keep looking for magic in the most commonplace strolls on very ordinary days.
